What is therapy and do I need it?

People see therapists for many reasons. Some small, some large and seemingly insurmountable. Some see different counsellors over the years, tackling different angles of the same problem. And some couldn’t think of anything worse than opening up their inner world to a stranger.

So, what is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy or "talk therapy", is the process of talking through your innerworld (or difficulties) with a genuine professional. The therapist is caring and curious and working to understand you and to help you do the same. The process allows you to gain insight into who you really are, how you are the way you are, your challenges, trauma, disappointments and unmet needs that may still linger and effect you.

What can therapy help with?

Therapy will help you to develop coping skills, gain clarity, trust yourself, listen to your instinct (the wisdom of your body), improve your self-awareness, regain choicefullness and spontenaity and create the conditions for lasting growth and meaningful change.

The healing effects of going through this process with a professional who you can trust and who cares for you is without parallell.

Therapy can help with a range of challenges and can vary in duration depending on each clients needs and desires.

There ought to be no stigma around seeking support, and we needn’t wait until we feel broken to seek personal support and development. whether youre in a crisis and want some solutions or as part of your longer-term mental health and self-care plan. Some of the problems a therapist works with  include:

  • career stresses and workplace conflict
  • relationship
  • trauma
  • grief and loss
  • parenting
  • addiction (drugs, alcohol, sex, work etc.)
  • gender identity and sexuality
  • anxiety, depression or low self-esteem
  • disordered eating
  • mood disorders
